10 Month Advanced Program

In the 10 month, 300 hour advanced program, our students become highly trained canine m as sagetherapists by learning through practical and applied experiences, how to work with many different types of dogs in a variety of real-life settings. Students will learn to work with the most challenging types of dogs, including both physical and behavioral challenges, dogs who are aversive to touch, and dogs who may be unsocial. Students gain the knowledge, skill, and c onfidence required to work effectively in this specialized and quickly growing field. The Advanced Canine Massage certification program is a comprehensive course that includes an abundance of hands-on practice. Students will be prepared to work confidently, skillfully, and professionally as canine massage therapists in a variety of work environments, including rehabilitation centers, veterinary clinics, animal shelters, training facilities, or private practice. This program is designed to prepare students to take the national certification exam in canine massage offered by NBCAAM ( www.nbcaam.org ). In addition to class time, students will document observation hours and perform case studies outside of class. 

This program will be structured a differently than in the past and with more hands-on opportunities. Students in the program will have open access to CSCM's new student clinic with real life clients, the ability to volunteer and work with shelter dogs, as well as the opportunity to gain experience working at real events.

Advanced Mentorship Program 

The mentorship program will cover all the material in the 10 month program in a more intensive nature, meeting 6 days a week for three and a half weeks with optional observation hours and evening events. Students will have the opportunity to work on real life clients in our new student clinic and have access to invaluable one-on-one instructor time. This program is designed to prepare students to take the national certification exam in canine massage offered by NBCAAM (www.nbcaam.org). In addition to the three and a half weeks in class, students will complete observation hours, case studies, tests and quizzes. This mentorship is only meant for the serious student who can learn in an accelerated fashion.

Level 1 - Canine Massage Foundations

The canine massage foundations class is a 7 day intensive program that covers basic canine massage techniques, massage history, canine behavior, basic anatomy and physiology, and low stress handling of dogs, among other topics. The class consists of 60 hours of in-class learning with a lot of hands-on practice and 40 hours of observation, case study, and internship experiences. A comprehensive manual with study objectives, at home exercises and testing is provided. The format of our Level 1 program is ideal for students who live in or outside of the Chicagoland area. Continued support is provided beyond the 7 days of in-class time and students will have the opportunity to work on real life clients in the student clinic. Completion of the observation hours, case studies, and testing is mandatory in order to move on to the next level. Also note that this Foundations Level I course is a prerequisite for Canine Massage Level 2.

Level 2 - Canine Massage

The Canine Massage Level 2 certification program is ideal for students who live in or outside of the Chicagoland area, and for anyone who has successfully completed the Canine Massage Foundations program, or an equivalent program, and wishes to further develop their knowledge, skill, and experience in this specialized and quickly growing field. In level 2, students will learn advanced techniques such as lymphatic massage, post-surgical massage, edema management, and rehabilitative medical massage. The class consists of 60 hours of in-class learning and 40 hours of case studies as well as some online tests and quizzes. Our level 2 program reviews and expands on topics covered in the foundations program and is designed to prepare students to take the national certification exam in canine massage offered by NBCAAM (www.nbcaam.org). The level 1 and 2 programs are a total of 200 hours combined, the minimum required by NBCAAM to become nationally certified. In addition, students will have a lot hands-on practice opportunities in and outside of class, access to the student clinic with the opportunity to work on real life clients as well as access to the resources portion of the CSCM website. Graduates of the Canine Massage Level 2 program are qualified to work professionally as canine massage therapists in a variety of work environments, including rehabilitation centers, veterinary clinics, animal shelters, training facilities, or private practice.
