Who Can Take This Course

Introduction to Canine Anatomy and Physiology contains material that is intended for the prospective canine massage therapist. However, anyone with an interest in learning or reviewing canine anatomy can benefit from this home study course, including groomers, trainers, animal rescue workers, pet parents, or members of the veterinary community.

Goals of Introduction to Canine Anatomy and Physiology

The goal of this course is to provide students with basic information about the eleven organ systems in the canine body, with special emphasis placed on the skeletal and muscular systems. There is much more to know about each system, but as canine massage therapists, we are required to understand the following:

  • The major functions of each body system
  • The parts that compose each body system
  • How massage affects each body system

Required Supplementary Materials

Required for this course is the book Dog Anatomy: A Coloring Atlas by Robert A. Kainer, DVM, MS and Thomas O. McCracken, MS.  This book can be purchased on Amazon or through another online book seller.

Each unit will refer to plates in the Coloring Atlas so that students have a visual reference tool for understanding each body system and its parts. We recommend that you color each plate according to the lessons in each unit as this will enhance learning and reinforce understanding. You may wish to photocopy plates before coloring them so that you can practice multiple times with clean copies of each structure.
